F.A.Q. | Music By Prisoners

*If your questions are not answered here, please contact us through our contact form.

- Do you have a producer?

Yes, our producers team are Berklee College of Music graduates trained in the highest standards of the music industry. They have 10+ years of experience and have worked with multiple artists in various styles.

- What styles/genres can be produced?

We can work with any kind of genre.

- How does the process go and how long does it take from start to finish?

This is the ideal process:

1) Making the beat. If you don't already have one, we will make it from scratch. Lets make sure it inspires you before moving to the next step.

2) Record your vocals. Once we have the beat ready, its time to record your vocals on top of the beat.

3) Mixing. Here is where we make sure that every element in your song interacts perfectly with each other.

4) Mastering. Having the mix ready, we can master your song and make it sound big and loud.

5) Review. If there are things that need to be changed, we go back to the necessary step. We want you to love your song.

6) Distribution. The song is ready, everyone is happy. Time to send it to the music platforms and make your song go LIVE!

The amount of time this process takes will ultimately depend on many factors, such as communication efficiency/speed, if we need to re-record vocals, how many revisions, etc. It can range from 7 to 20+ days depending on these.

- Can I use a beat I already have?

Yes. The only requirement here is that the beat is copyright free or that you own the full rights to it. We cannot distribute it if the beat doesn't meet these requirements.

- Can we create a beat from scratch?

Yes. Moreover, this is recommended, since it will grant you a unique beat that's fully owned by you. We do our best to make the music in your head a reality.

- What if I don’t have all my lyrics finished? Can I get help with that?

Absolutely, we also offer a service of lyric writing if you need any help with that. It can be a whole section or maybe just a few sentences. Whatever you need.

- How should I record my vocals?

The ideal situation would be having you record your vocals into a digital recorder. By doing this, we can get the best quality recording possible in a non-studio situation. It is very important to make sure there are as little (ideally none) background noise at the time of recording your vocals.

If you can’t, we will have to record your vocals through a phone call. This will require extra production steps in order to “restore” and “enhance” the quality of the recording as much as possible.

- Is mixing and mastering necessary?

Mixing and mastering is the sound engineering step of the song development. When the song is fully recorded and produced, we move to the mixing side. After mixing, we do the mastering, which is a process done to the song as a whole.

In order to meet the industry standards, it is necessary to have at least a basic mixing/mastering on the song. We do recommend going pro with this, since it will give your song much better quality and will ensure the best possible listening experience.

- What is mixing?

Mixing is the process of combining all the individual tracks or elements of a song into a final, cohesive piece of music. Imagine you have separate recordings for vocals, guitars, drums, and other instruments. Mixing is like putting together a puzzle, making sure each piece fits well and sounds good together. It involves carefully applying EQs, pannings, compressions, exciters, saturations, reverbs, effects, etc. to each individual track in the song.

- What is mastering?

Mastering is the final step in music creation, refining a song for optimal sound quality. It involves technical adjustments, ensuring balanced frequencies and consistent volume by taking the mixed song and preparing it for various playback systems (like headphones, car speakers, or club sound systems) to ensure it sounds great everywhere.

Crucial for wide distribution, it corrects imperfections and adheres to industry standards, enhancing the overall impact of the music.

- Where is my music going to be available?

We will distribute your music to 150+ streaming platforms. Including the most popular like Spotify, Itunes, Amazon Music, YouTube, Tidal, etc.

- How will I make money from my music?

You will earn royalties per song stream. The cumulation of every stream on every platform will then be received as streaming and publishing revenue.

We can also sell your music online by charging per download.

- How do I collect my royalties?

1) If you publish as an independent you may direct your royalties to any bank account you choose.

2) If you do not have a bank account and use our Music by Prisoners label, your royalties will be deposited to our account and paid by us quarterly (every three months).

- What does “artist verification” on the artist profile mean?

Have you seen or heard about the “blue checkmark” some people have on their social media? This is kind of the same thing, but in your Spotify/YouTube/Itunes artist profile. It means you are now verified as an authentic artist, giving you more credibility and exposure.

- What is the Spotify editorial playlist pitching?

It is recommended to leave a 3 week space from the time we sent your song to be distributed to the day it goes live. This is with the purpose of letting the streaming platforms review your song and get the chance to be featured in their editorial playlists. Getting into those playlists means a HUGE amount of exposure. After the first day your song gets sent, you can send a pitch to the editorial teams with the hopes of getting better chances to be featured on one of their playlists.

This cannot be guaranteed, since it will ultimately depend on their editorial team side. The chances are small but get higher as you release more music and promote it efficiently.

- What if I don’t have access to a digital recorder?

We can schedule a phone call to record your voice through the call. It will be very important for you to make sure there are no audible background noises (at least the minimum possible). The more isolated your voice can be, the better job we can do at enhancing the recording.
